Volunteers

The willingness of our volunteers to share their skills and talents is highly appreciated. As we bring volunteers into our community, it is important that we understand our responsibilities to both the volunteer and the University. Units are responsible for following the Standards for Departments Using Volunteer Services, completing a Volunteer Qualification Checklist for the specific volunteer and having that volunteer sign the Information for Volunteers form.

Refer all 4-H volunteers to 4-H's Volunteer page. 4-H completes the approval process for its volunteers.

The Standards for Departments Using Volunteer Services provides information on the process and qualification for obtaining a volunteer. The Volunteer Qualification Checklist is to be used with the “Standards for Departments Using Volunteer Services”. Use of volunteers is affected by complex compliance issues including but not limited to Human Resources, INS, Risk, IRS, International Programs Office, Office of Research Assurances, Environmental Health and Safety, and Fair Labor Standards Act. This checklist and accompanying standards have been developed to help you avoid consequences to both your volunteer and your department, but “case by case” issues may require further consultation. Units using volunteers are responsible for reading, understanding and implementing the standards. The Volunteer Qualification Checklist is completed online. The requester will receive the checklist for their specific volunteer in an email when the form is submitted. Dean or Division Vice President's signature and approval of the checklist means the requester has correctly navigated the various issues and implemented information in the guidelines document.

The Information for Volunteers form provides important information to the volunteer about the service that they will be providing and collects emergency contact information.
