U of I Online Presentation by former U.S. Ambassador Feb. 16
February 07, 2022
MOSCOW, Idaho 鈥 Feb. 7, 2022 鈥 A free presentation titled 鈥淭he U.S. and India: New Challenges and Opportunities,鈥 by former United States Ambassador Nancy Powell, an expert on South Asia and foreign affairs, is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, online.
The address is part of a weeklong remote visit from Powell, this year鈥檚 Martin Institute Distinguished Practitioner of International Affairs.
During the week, Powell will teach a short course on American diplomacy in South Asia and visit remotely with students, including those from the Model United Nations program and international politics courses.
鈥淲e are thrilled to have such an accomplished diplomat as the 2022 Distinguished Practitioner of International Affairs,鈥 said Romuald Afatchao, associate director of the Martin Institute. 鈥淲e are hoping for a candid and informative discussion about current foreign policy issues based on Ambassador Powell鈥檚 extensive experience.鈥
Powell, one of the country鈥檚 most experienced diplomats, holds the highest rank in the U.S. Foreign Service. Her positions have included ambassador to Uganda, Ghana, Pakistan, Nepal and India, as well as director general of the foreign service and director of human resources. She served as national intelligence officer for South Asia at the National Intelligence Council, and as the U.S. State Department鈥檚 senior coordinator for avian influenza. Powell returned to the department for three months in 2014 to coordinate the agency鈥檚 Ebola effort.
Held annually through the Martin Institute, the Visiting Distinguished Practitioners of International Affairs events provide a forum for experts to share their insights, and a unique opportunity for the public to engage in meaningful, face-to-face dialogue with them. Previous guests include former U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker, international trade expert Daryl Brehm and Danish Ambassador Rolf M.H.P. Holmboe.
